3 Homemade Serum for Hair Growth (Stimulate Your Hair With Herbs)

What happens when you don’t exercise?
Big, comfy chairs might feel great to sit in all day long, but without any exercise your muscles don’t feel that good. They lose their tone and strength.
The result is unflattering “flabby arms and jiggly tummy’’. And who likes that?
The same happens with your hair. When you leave your scalp without any stimulation or nourishment, the hair gets weak, fragile and thin. So how do you strengthen weak, thinning hair??
Well, with the help of homemade serum.
What is a Homemade Serum?
When you have weak, thinning hair, applying a thick oil or lotion may disturb your already weak roots.
So for your hair to survive and thrive you need something gentle, yet effective. And what can be better than a homemade hair serum? A homemade serum is a watery infusion made with hair-nourishing herbs. The infusion process extracts all the amazing nutrients and helps strengthen your hair.
I have tried and tested 3 herbs that make the best serum for hair growth. Also, when you massage the serum on your scalp you mobilise the scalp, and it helps to boost the circulation and propels hair growth.
Here’s are 3 Most Effective Homemade Serums for Hair Growth

3 Homemade Serum for Hair Growth
1. Amla Serum for Strong, Thick Hair

In ayurveda, amla is said to be amrit (nectar) for hair. And it truly is…
Amla has extraordinary amounts of vitamin C and other antioxidants which help to slow hair loss and kick-start hair growth. Besides, massaging amla juice will increase volume and texture of hair and make them appear healthier and shinier.
Also, you scalp will be clean and clear of all the flakes and dandruff. You got to try this at least once.
To Make Amla Serum You Will Need:
- 1 fresh amla
- 1 tablespoon coconut oil (use extra virgin coconut oil)
The first step is to grate/blend the amla and extract its juice (discard the pit). I use a grater and squeeze out the juice (with your hand or use a sieve if you like). One amla will give you 1 to 1 ½ tablespoon of amla juice.
Place coconut oil and amla juice in a bowl. If the coconut oil is solid, then warm the mixture by placing the bowl in hot water – you will see it turns liquid in no time.
And your Amla Hair Growth Serum is ready.

How to use: Apply amla serum into your scalp, using your finger. Massage gently for 2 to 4 minutes and let it sit for one to two hours. Then wash your hair with your favourite shampoo.
You can use it once or twice a week.

2. Rosemary Serum to Stimulate Growth
Rosemary is another very useful remedy for weak and falling hair. It contains a unique substance called ursolic acid which has potent anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal and antioxidants properties. As you may know, antioxidants help get rid of hair damaging free radicals. You don’t want too many free radicals build-up in your hair as they are responsible for thinning as well as greying.
Rosemary also boosts scalp circulation. This means more oxygen and nutrients will be delivered to hair roots, and that in turn promotes strong and healthy hair growth.
What’s more, rosemary conditions hair and adds luster and body to it. Plus, rosemary also helps to promote a healthy scalp, all thanks to its anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal properties.
To Make Rosemary Serum You Will Need:
- 1 tablespoon dried rosemary or 2-3 sprigs of fresh rosemary
- 1 tablespoon dried sage leaves or 2-3 sprigs of fresh sage (optional, stimulates growth and softens hair)
- 1 cup hot water
Bring the water to a boil. Place rosemary (and sage) in a jar/bowl, pour the hot water, cover and let it steep until cool.
Next, strain out the spent herbs.
How to use:
Massage the rosemary serum into your scalp and leave it on. It’s very light and will absorb nicely into the scalp.
If you think that it’s making your hair weighed down, then you can wash it out with plain water after an hour or so. Use 2-3 times a week. Store the remaining serum in the fridge, it will last a week
3. Green Tea Serum to Reduce DHT and Increase Shine
Green tea is a fantastic remedy to stimulate hair growth.
As most of us know, green tea has caffeine in it. And caffeine works in multiple ways to encourage growth. Firstly, it increases the micro-circulation in the scalp, bringing more nutrients to the hair follicles. Plus, caffeine also stimulates hair growth by inhibiting the production of DHT (dihydrotestosterone) – the hormone that causes male and female pattern baldness.
Besides, green tea is a good source of panthenol, the famous hair vitamin often used in shampoos and conditioners to strengthen hair and make them appear glossy.
To make Green tea serum You Will Need:
- 1 teaspoon loose Green Tea leaves or 1 Green Tea Bag
- 1 teaspoon Ginger Juice (optional)
- 1 teaspoon Aloe Vera Juice (optional)
- 1/2 cup Hot Water
Bring the water to a boil. Place green tea in a jar/bowl, pour the hot water, cover and let it steep until cool. Strain and use.
You can also add aloe vera juice for extra boost. Mix with green tea and use.
How to use:
Massage the serum into your scalp and hair and let it sit for an hour or so. Then rinse with water.
Use 2-3 times a week. Store the remaining serum in the fridge, it will last a week.
Applying Tip: Use a squeeze/applicator bottle for easy application. You will find them at the beauty store or online

Hi Minaz,
Can we make the serum using dry amla? We don’t get fresh amla here.
And I have another question, is it okay to hear aloe gel in coconut oil, in case I intend to make aloe oil?
Please let me know 🙂
Thanks!
Edit: Heat* aloe gel
Is it ok to use rosemary essential oil instead of using herbs?
I’ve lost a lot of hair over the last 8 months due to a few factors (stressful event, rapid weight loss, low iron/ferritin and potentially an undiagnosed scalp issue). I can’t seem to get my scalp issues under control, which I think is inhibiting my recovery. Nothing has worked so I’m interested in trying the amla and coconut oil serum but amla isn’t available for purchase where I live. Can you recommend a powder I could buy or does it need to be fresh amla fruit? Thank you!
If you have scalp issues, I won’t use amla powder. I would suggest garlic hair oil for you.
I want tips for hair growing &thick
Hey Minaz, can we substitute peppermint oil with lavender and tea tree in rosemary serum.
Hi Sneha, yes you can.
Can you use powdered Amla instead of fresh if you can’t find fresh?
Yes, you can try amla powder, but if you don’t like the gritty nature then make it into tea.
Awesome. Thanks! Not to sound dumb, just just boil water and add some Amla powder to make the tea? How much Amla? Or how do you suggest the tea be made? I do hate the grittiness of the powder. Thanks!!
It’s okay to clarify. You can use 1 teaspoon amla powder and 1/2 cup hot water and follow the instruction for chamomile serum.
Can you use amla powder if you can’t get the actual Amla fruit?
As I was telling Gracie, the you may or may not like the feel of gritty amla, so make amla tea with powder and use that on your scalp.
I want to try the rosemary hair serum but I have rosemary essential oil instead of rosemary leaves. How many drops of essential oil should I use in place of the leaves?
Yes can use rosemary essential oil for hair growth. Mix 2 tablespoons of coconut oil (or olive oil) with 15 drops of rosemary oil. Massage this into your scalp and hair. You can store the remaining for later use.
I do not want to use coconut Oil because my hair is falling out so bad. I’d rather use a spray. I want to make the Rosemary Hair Serum recipe above. How many drops Rosemary essential oil do I use in place of the 2 tablespoons fresh Rosemary leaves? Thanks for the great info!
Use 10-15 drops in a cup of water. Shake thoroughly before using.
Thank you!!
Thanks for ur unvaluable experience shared. I am going to use thw amla hair growth serum(50% coconut oil +50% fresh amla juice=Amla hair growth serum). Can I avoid the amla serum into my scalp for whole night? can it affects negetively or supports postively? how many times can I use this serum in one week? plese reply me. Thanks
Hi Ganesh, you can leave amla serum overnight, but one hour is also enough. Try both and see what your hair likes.
Use 2 times a week.
Hi Minaz,
I found your website recently and just started on some of the thinning hair recommendations you provided. I have extremely thin dry gray/white/blond hair and have tried hair-growth recipes in the past but have a problem with reactions and allergies.
I can’t use coconut oil, it makes my scalp itch; same with argan, jojoba, grapeseed, etc. Anything that as a strong floral scent (like rose) makes my eyes water and my scalp itch, etc.
I just started using the rosemary hair serum. I only added two drops of lavender since I can’t tolerate a strong floral smell. Do I spray it on daily? And give a gentle massage to the scalp? Leave it in? It seems to make my hair look thicker. (Love rosemary, by the way.)
Second, I’ve used the castor oil and egg with honey pack before. I do notice my hair isn’t quite as greasy with all the ingredients. I thought I was growing some hair at the scalp, but made the mistake of trying to color my hair with a commercial product. It was considered a mild, no peroxide or ammonia haircolor (more like a tint that lasts for about 4-5 shampoos.) I had to wash it out after less than five minutes since my scalp felt like it was burning. I can’t tell if the thin, little hairs at my hairline are from hair that broke off or possibly hair that had been coming in, but I was also using aloe vera gel on my scalp. Is it too drying? I stopped using it since I read it can dry out the hair more. When I did use it, it made the roots look denser. I stopped using both in the interim.
One final one: if I do use the castor oil, etc. pack, do I use another egg yolk to shampoo it out? I don’t want to use too many eggs if they dry the hair and I don’t want to be shampooing my hair too often.
Sorry, I know this is confusing. Thanks so much in advance!
Hi Cathy, use the oil/serum that works best for you. You can skip lavender if you don’t like it.
Yes aloe can be drying on its own, but you can use it with oils that you like – almond, olive.
To wash out castor oil pack, try the first hair rinse.
Let me know how it goes.
If I use rosemary without the added ingredients can it damage my hair?
Hi Minaz,
I am finally making the Rosemary Hair Serum it
smells so good like Thanksgiving. I know it says the Lavender oil is optional
is that to help with the hair loss as well or is it so the serum won’t be too
drying?
I do have dried Lavender flowers I’m not sure if I should add that or if it
would be better to add an oil?
I don’t have any right now the essential oils I have are Orange, Lime,
and Lemon Eucalyptus. Other regular oils I have are Argan, Jojoba, pumpkin
seed, grape seed, coconut, neem, and Hemp oil. I don’t know if I should add one
of those or just use it without the oil?
I am loving the way this smells and I haven’t even used it yet.
Hi Karen,
Lavender is oil balancing as well as helps with hair loss. You can use dried flowers.
Use the serum as you made it, and see how you like it. For second time add lavender flowers and compare.
Also try argan or coconut oil.

HI am 25, I have been suffering from hair thinning. I am really worried about my hair.
Please let me know how many time I need to have these massages a week and how long will it take for me to see the results? Does this method works on heriditary thinning too?
Hi Lakshan, give it a try. I have written above how many times you can use.
Hi. Great post!
I was just wondering with the Amla serum if we can make some large quantity and store it in the fridge or freezer? How long will it last and is it safe to do so?
Thanks.
Hi Mickey,
It works the best when you use it fresh.
I have never tried, but try freezing it.
Please use fresh Amla as the vitamin C content is lost while storing it..
I love your tips and have been trying a lot of your recipes
thank you for sharing your knowledge. I have a question about the Rosemary hair
serum when I looked at the ingredients list it doesn’t say how much thyme to use but under method it say to bring the water to a boil then add the rosemary and thyme. How much thyme should I
use is it the same amount as the rosemary?
Oops!
Added now, thanks Karen.
Let me know how it works for you.
Thank you I will try it soon.
Thank you so much for all your tips! I love your site so much. I am an African American with low porosity course natural hair and I had a really hard time finding products that agree with my hair. But thanks to reading your site, I make my own banana, lemon juice, molasses hair conditioner! So far so good. So thanks again!?
Hi Natasha,
Thanks for your kind words. I am happy to know that you are enjoying hair buddha.
I remember my mom use to apply coconut oil with amla when I was small and I had such beautiful thick long shiny hair. This reminded me of those days and looked up my old pictures my hair was so good then. Thanks for reminding I am going to try amla serum again, I know it worked in the past hoping I will get those beautiful hair back.
Hi Swati, amla is a great tonic for hair. You must try it out again.
I am 20 year old boy and I have lost more than 50% of may hair. Can you help me regrow my hair or at least prevent further loss. Will these things work ?
Give amla hair serum a try, it’s really good.
Can you use the dried alma berries for this rinse also?
Nice. I wll try rosemary one.
