Make Your Own Egg Hair Mask: Boost Volume and Thickness Instantly

Want hair like a film celebrity? Shiny, Bouncy and Voluminous.
Do what they do…
Exercise.
Get beauty sleep.
Eat healthy.
And if all that is too much – put egg on the hair.
It smells a little, but many celebs swear by this at-home beauty secret. Eggs are full of protein, which helps strengthen your hair while adding texture, shine and bounce to it.
Egg on its own is good for hair, but adding olive oil takes the hair mask to another level. The moisturising benefits of olive oil marry well with the strengthening effects of the egg. Olive oil makes hair soft, silky and smooth as well as keeps scalp dryness at bay.
Made with everyday kitchen ingredients – Egg and Olive oil – this mask will make your hair look amazing like you got it done at an expensive salon.
Benefits of Egg and Olive oil Hair Mask:
- Strengthens the hair shaft and adds volume to your hair
- Encourages faster hair growth
- Reduces hair fall
- Moisturises hair and makes it soft, shiny and healthy
- Keep splits ends at bay
- Adds definition and bounce to your hair
- Can help with dandruff and scalp dryness
Before we see how to make the hair mask, let’s find out how eggs help with hair growth…
How the Hen-k Eggs Promote Hair Growth:
Eggs are a rich source of protein, which serves as a ‘building block’ for our hair. The protein-rich egg will make the hair stronger and voluminous. It’s especially beneficial for those with fine, thin or damaged hair.
But egg is also an excellent conditioner. All thanks to its fatty yolk. It deep conditions hair, improving its shine and softness. So if you got dry, dull hair, it will help you. Egg yolk also contains vitamin A, D, E, B12, pantothenic acid, zinc and biotin. All fabulous for healthy hair growth.
What’s more, if you are suffering from pattern baldness, egg may be the key to promoting new hair growth. A team of Japanese researchers found that the yolk of chicken’s egg contains ‘hair growth peptide’, which can stimulate hair follicles and improve growth in those with female pattern hair loss.
Egg Mask has helped my sister regrow lost hair due to hypothyroidism. Of course, I can’t say enough how important it is to eat veggies, beans and pulses, but applying a hair mask has its benefits. My sister’s hair is wavy and on the dry side. This mask adds body, texture and shine to her hair.
She uses it weekly to maintain and restore her hair. She even convinced me to try this mask. Egg is something I was very reluctant to put on. Although I love eggs — for breakfast — the idea of putting it on my hair was not very appealing. But my sister’s huge praises for this mask finally convinced me.
And I liked it. After the egg mask my straight-ish hair had more volume and appeared fuller and thicker. They looked fab. I don’t use it as regularly, may be once a month is good for me.
What should I use in my mask? Egg yolk, egg white or whole egg
Well, it will depend on your hair – whether it’s dry, oily, normal or combination.
This is what each component of the egg has to offer:
Egg yolk = fatty acids = adds moisture and softness to hair
Egg white = protein = adds strength and texture to your hair
If your hair is dry, brittle, using an egg yolk hair mask (minus the egg white) is an excellent way to condition and nourish your hair. And those with very oily hair can make the mask with egg white, as it helps to remove excess oil from the hair as well as add volume and thickness to hair. And if your hair is normal or combination, use a whole egg.
Egg and Olive oil Hair Mask for Dry Hair
For the basic mask, you only need egg yolk and olive oil. But you can add extra moisturising ingredients like honey, avocado, yogurt, or almond milk.
What you will need:
- 1 egg yolk
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- ½ tablespoon honey
- 1 tablespoon aloe vera juice (optional, gives definition and smoothness)
- ¼ cup coconut milk (optional, adds softness and shine to hair)
Place egg yolk, olive oil, honey, etc., in a bowl and mix well. You can add 2-3 tablespoons of water to thin out the mixture.
If using an avocado, blend it to a puree before adding.
How to apply
Start with dry hair. Apply to your hair, from roots to tips. Place a shower cap or wrap an old towel to avoid dripping. Let the mask soak in for 15-45 minutes.
Then rinse it out. Be sure to use cool or lukewarm water so the egg doesn’t cook in your hair. Next, shampoo lightly and towel dry your hair.
You can apply your favourite leave-in conditioner at this stage. It will help seal the moisture, and when your hair dries, it will look shiny and vibrant.
How often to apply: Once a week or once every 15 days.
Egg and Olive Oil Hair Mask for Normal to Oily Hair
If you got oily, normal or combination hair (oily roots and dry ends), use whole egg – both egg white and yolk. Again, for the basic mask, use just the egg and olive oil. For an extra boost, use the optionals given below.
What you will need:
- 1 egg
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 tablespoon honey (optional, use for extra moisture)
- 1 teaspoon lime juice (optional, helps to cut greasiness)
- 1 tablespoon coconut milk (optional, adds softness and shine)
Place all the ingredients in a bowl and mix well. You can add 2-3 tablespoons of water to thin out the mixture.
Use lime juice if you have very oily hair or excess product build-up. And coconut milk if you have dry ends.
How to apply:
Start with dry hair. Apply to your hair, from roots to tips. Place a shower cap or wrap an old towel over to avoid dripping. Let the mask soak in for 15-45 minutes.
Then rinse it out. Be sure to use cool or lukewarm water so the egg doesn’t cook in your hair. Next, shampoo lightly and towel dry your hair and leave it to dry naturally.
If you got dry ends or fly away hair, apply a small amount of coconut oil as a leave-in conditioner to make hair smooth and tidy.
Your newly moisturised hair will look shiny, healthy and bouncy.
How often to apply: Once a week
Extra notes:
- If your hair is long, you can double or triple the recipe.
- Add onion juice if you are losing a lot of hair.
- I like olive oil for this mask. But feel free to experiment with different oils like coconut, almond, macadamia nut or jojoba.
- Honey can lighten your hair over time. You can use other alternatives like maple syrup (for fair hair) or blackstrap molasses (for dark hair).
- A good alternative to yogurt is almond milk or cow’s milk
- You can skip conditioning after this mask, see how your hair feels. A great alternative to conditioning is hair rinse. Here are some ideas.
- If your hair feels dry, stiff and looks dull after applying this mask, it can be a sign of protein overload. This means your hair needs more moisture (here’s a moisturising hair mask you can use).

Hell Minaz. It’s taken me a long time to try washing my hair with egg yolk. I just didn’t see how it was going to clean my hair, but I have 5 different shampoos here, all sulfate free, but everytime I wash my hair, I get a tub full of hair. I can’t lose anymore. Today I washed with 1 egg yolk. I also made the rinse with a peppermint teabag, some ground up lavender & rosemary, chamomile flowers & white sage in a tea strainer. I let it steep for a long time, got it to room temperature & rinsed my hair with it. It’s amazing! I did not get a tub full of hair, nor a sink full when I combed it out. My hair is full, I didn’t need to put mousse on it to keep it back, it just stays back by itself. It feels really soft & managable. I will keep doing this & hopefully my lost hair will grow back. Also I found Mung Beans at Winco, our local grocery store. I haven’t made the Dosa yet, but I did make a wonderful pot of stew with sauteed onions, garlic, ginger, carrots, soaked mung beans & coconut milk, cumin, salt & ground pepper. Boy was it good! And very filling! I know I got a lot of good vitamins in that. I’ll try the Dosa this week.
Thank you for all your suggestions! We all need help with our hair!
Hi Peni, I know how good a homemade shampoo can be. I have had my struggles finding a good SLS-free natural shampoo, but it’s hardly been a success. I am so happy to hear that egg shampoo followed by herbal hair rinse worked wonders for your hair. Let me know how you like mung dosa.
Thanks for sharing your experience and suggestion with us. I tried the hair pack but everyone around me complained about the smell. Do you have a solution for that?
Sharmila, the smell usually goes away after the hair dries. You can do peppermint rinse and it will take care of the smell. Any herbal hair rinse is good to fade the smell.  Â
this maybe work for me and my hair for my girls your hair may not always seem as long as is can be but, if you take care of it and not just leave it in a ponytail then you would know if its long my hair is long but i tried the ingredients and guess what it works so yall try this out ASAP!!!!!!
Thanks for sharing this mask! I have also tried your rice hair rinse recipe. I have thin hair and i really want to grow more hair so that it becomes thicker, i really hope this mask will work after using it a few times!!
Thank you. Will try your recipe.
Very good
Let me know how it works for you.
What if I allow it to last longer than an hour, hope it won’t cause any damage
It will not cause damage, but why leave it longer as I don’t see any benefit. It’s also very uncomfortable to leave longer.
Really
eggs and Oliver oil really make your hair grow
Jump to Other hair masks – Half an avocado, mashed, can be used as a hair mask. … some examples are easy to make with commonly available items.
This hair mask works I used 1 egg and 1tbps of honey and oil and it’ll leave your hair alittle greasy for the first wash but after the second wash it is vv silky and not frizzy at all which I had trouble with and I hope this will help my hair grow bc it’s vv short Ill be coming back in a month to post if it rly does grow out your hair, enjoy<3
Yay! Thanks for sharing and looking forwards to hearing more from you.
Thanks for putting up the recipe for this hair mask. Can’t wait to give it a try the next time I step into the shower to wash my hair. Have been struggling with frizzy hair for nearly a couple of years and I’m soo grateful I finally found the remedy for it.
Hi Minaz,
Congratulations on putting together a wonderful website full of so much information. I usually oil my hair with a mix of olive oil and castor oil and then shampoo using reetha, shikakai, amla and methi seed powders. I have thin and dry greying hair. I was wondering if I could use this hair mask on my oiled hair and then wash using the above mentioned powders? Do you think it will dry my hair out?
Hi Teejay, you can add some coconut milk or honey and it won’t dry out your hair. You can also add some tulsi and neem powder to it.
Hello all. Warm greetings.. I have been applying egg-olive oil mask for quiet some time now. It did wonders to my hair. Instead of spending thousands on chemical shampoo I have opted for a simple herbal shampoo along with this mask. That’s it. !!! Pls don’t spend on chemical shampoos or at salons.. Get a good hair cut. Do regular oiling and apply this mask after shampoo and that’s it.
For mask I take one egg+ 2tb spoon olive oil + half cup of each fullers earth powder and rice flour . U can increase or decrease the quantity accordingly.
Good luck!!
Please can I wash the olive oil and the egg mask off with just normal water without shampoo?
Yes, but it may leave your hair a little greasy.
Using less olive oil will help.
I’m a Nigerian my hair is not oily and whenever I wash it shrink and notices I loose hair after an hairstylist, I grow my natural hair, can I use just the egg and olive oil and apply coconut oil after rinsing off and also can I try the rice fermented water with this method also,I have a sensitive skin and scalp so scared of using any product in my hair. Thanks first time here.
Hello, yes you can try fermented rice water and egg yolk and olive oil mask (and add some honey to it).
Coconut oil can be drying, so may be use oils like almond or olive, or butters like shea.
Can essential oil be added to this recipe to make it smell better?
how many times do i have to use this for results to show??
Just a couple of times and if it’s working for you you will know it.
I have hypothyroid and hair fall since then . Currently i apply sesame oil(kesh kranti) castor oil and olive oil along with rosemary peppermint and lavender oils
Please let me know if this will work for hair fall and growth .also coconut oil makes my hair dry but jojoba oil works.please suggest .my hair is dry brittle and fine ????????????????
I wouldn’t combine Kesh kranti with other oils. Is this combination helping you to stop hair loss?
This is so cool! My mom used to put mayo in my hair because it is so fine and would get snarly. I’m hyperthyroid so that can make hair and nails brittle, along with damage from lightening hair on my own lol. I’m a geek for at home stuff so I’m going to do this right now! IF Only I could add my before and after.
I love egg and olive oil mask. It is really hair transforming.
You can send me your before and after on [email protected] and I will upload on the post.

yogurt and honey hair mask/a>
thank you so much mam for this suggestion.:)
wanted to know since i neither get organic yoghurt nor coconut milk so if i get the tetra pack coconut milk from the company amul so can i use that??
also if i go for this once a week do i need a hair wash after that??and mam since i wash my hair with the re-she shampoo combined with fenugreek seeds so if i use honey for this yoghurt honey mask will my hair colour lighten??as my hair colour has become darker with the re-she shampoo so i don’t want to lose that. Also mam wanted to know in a week how many times can i put bhringraj on my hair?Kindly guide me Mam.
You can use amul coconut milk. You need to wash your hair after. It’s won’t lighten if you do the mask once a week. Put bhringraj once-twice a week.
Which shampoo is better after applying egg mask on hair . Can I use x tenso shampoo +conditioner ?
Hi. So i tried this mask and it made my hair soft. I have a very oily scalp so it seems to work well with eggs. For several months I have a couple of oily strands and they won’t go away even with normal shampoo that has sulfates in it.Do you have any advice? I thought maybe if I cut it really short or shaved it it might grow back and look normal again. I feel that it could have been baking soda but I didn’t used baking soda for very long.
Hi Ana, you need to look into your diet and stress levels as they too affect the oil balance of your skin.
This was a wonderful gift for my hair. It worked wonderfully! Thank you Minaz…
Awesome! I am so happy to know it worked for you.
Is it good for a guy to apply it to his hair?
Yes if it’s good for girls it’s good for guys.
Hi there,
That’s a lovely and informative website. I tried the egg yolk and olive oil mask. While my hair became really soft, the ends which are dry as hay still remain the same. Can you please suggest anything specific for the dry and coarse ends. There is very clear difference between the top half of my hair and the hair ends.
Hi Parinitha, apply a few drops of almond oil or argan oil to your ends after washing and towel drying your hair. This will help seal moisture into your strands.
I love this mask alot after years and years of trying to grow it i finally found something.
Yeh! I am so glad to hear that. Thanks for sharing!
Should I use extra virgin olive oil or purified olive oil?
Use extra virgin olive oil.
Thanks Minaz will try it.
Instead of olive oil can we use any other oil
You can use almond oil, coconut oil, sesame oil, mustard oil, or castor oil.
Should I apply this mask before washing my hair or after
