Grey hair looks gorgeous. It’s a sign of wisdom. But the trouble is if greying happens early in life.

Research indicates that genetics play a big role in greying of hair. So does stress and poor nutrition. Yes, you can’t change your genes, but you can certainly affect them by living a healthy lifestyle.

So eating healthy will not just improve your overall health, it will also help preserve your hair color for many more year. Besides, certain foods are said to be more beneficial to prevent grey hair. Do you want to know which ones are the best? Here are top 3 foods to stop and prevent grey hair:

1. Fruits and Vegetables

Fresh fruits to prevent grey hair

Fresh fruits to prevent grey hairWe all know that fruits and vegetables are important for our health. But how do they help prevent greying?

Before that, let’s see what causes gray hair…

What Causes Grey Hair:

New research suggests that it is not the loss of hair pigments that turns hair grey; it is the build-up of hydrogen peroxide in the hair follicles that literally bleaches the hair inside out.

Hydrogen peroxide is naturally produced in our bodies as a by-product of regular metabolism. It is also formed as a result of exposure to X-rays, second-hand smoke, stress, and pollution.

Besides, a high concentration of hydrogen peroxide can cause signs of aging such as: wrinkles, arthritis, brain degeneration, and heart disease.

So how do you fight hydrogen peroxide? By eating more antioxidants.

Fruits and vegetables are packed with antioxidants, which have the power to slow the aging process and keep you and your hair healthy and beautiful.

What to eat: You don’t have to eat exotic, expensive fruit and vegetables. Just eat more local and seasonal produce. This is because the seasonal and local food is fresher and so tends to be tastier and more nutritious. Plus, you also support your local farmers.

2. Almondsalmonds prevent grey hair

We saw above how hydrogen peroxide turns hair grey. Eating antioxidant rich foods is one way to get rid of hydrogen peroxide.

Besides our bodies are also well equipped to convert this nasty hydrogen peroxide into harmless oxygen and water. And it does this with the help of an enzyme called catalase — which is a powerful antioxidant.

But as we get older, our bodies make less catalase. As a result, peroxide builds up, leaving us with ever-increasing amounts of grey hair. Even factors such as stress and poor diet can cause catalase levels to go down.

The good news is almonds can help increase catalase levels in our body. So this nutty treat can prevent your hair from greying for a long time.

Rich in vitamin E, almonds are great for your skin too.

How to take almonds in your diet: I soak almonds overnight in water and eat them in the morning with breakfast. You can also eat them dry, as a snack, but soaking process enhances nutrient content and also makes it more alkaline and easy to digest.

Buying tip: I prefer buying raw organic almonds because they contain maximum nutrients.

3. AmlaAmla for grey hair

In traditional Indian medicine, amla is considered as one of the best rejuvenative herbs. It is excellent for preventing hair greying – in Ayurvedic terms, a classic sign of excess pitta dosha (excess body heat).

Amla is cooling and helps reduce pitta dosha. Plus it contains tons of vitamin C, antioxidants, and other amazing nutrients — which help to slow hair loss and greying, as well as delay other signs of ageing.

When used as a hair rinse, amla conditions hair, adds shine and increases volume and thickness of your hair. Regular use of this rinse is also said to darken your hair naturally.

Things to avoid if you want to preserve your hair’s health and colour

  • Smoking – reduces circulation of the scalp, and generates free radicals
  • Too much Caffeine – makes body acidic, which is not good for our cells, including hair cells
  • Packaged foods and drinks – contains little nutrients
  • Excess sugar – depletes body of vital nutrients
  • Use of synthetic dyes – can permanently damage the hair follicles

And in the end, I just want to say to you that you don’t have to hide your grey hair. If you think it’s a part of growing old, just embrace it gracefully and you will look beautiful. Because You are beautiful!

If you look closely at a tree you’ll notice it’s knots and dead branches, just like our bodies. What we learn is that beauty and imperfection go together wonderfully.

Hi Lisa,

I’m 45 and I’ve got a bit of gray hair and it’s already bothering me, so I know how you feel.
But our external manifestations is trying to communicate with us in terms of our health internally. It only takes a few weeks here and there of slacking off on our healthy regime for our internal well being to be affected. So listen to your body and try to figure out what it needs. Being not too fat nor too skinny doesn’t tell you much about you health. Doctors say you’re healthy because you probably don’t have any serious conditions but doctors don’t know and can’t see everything that’s happening in your body. To me the cause your gray hair could involve many factors namely hair products, deficiency in certain minerals, stress, or certain internal organ(s) is not in its optimal state. People say it is very important to eat a balanced diet but nowadays a balanced diet is just too vague. There’s so many kinds of diet out there that you wouldn’t know which one is good. But personally, I wouldn’t depend on supplements because it’s no longer in its organic form like when it’s in fruits and vegetables. And sleeping 8 hrs can give different results depending on the time frame of your 24 hr cycle, say from 9pm-5am sleep will have different affects to a 9am-5pm, just to be a little extreme but you get the point. It’s a bit interesting you compare with your husband how you’re jealous of his hair, but just a reminder that the hair is only one of many things that reflects your health, excessive drinking would damage your liver and give you gout, excessive smoking would damage your lungs and kill your brain cells and who knows what else. Drinking a lot of water sounds healthy but what if you’re just draining your minerals, what if you drink less water but eat more water-rich fruits and vegetables, in which case would give you minerals and vitamins. When you drink water do you drink a little bit at a time or do you gulp a whole glass? The former is better for you by the way. So analyse for your self and do more research to help improve your healthy lifestyle. Don’t forget to stay active because blood circulation is absolutely crucial for your health.

Wish you would reverse your gray hair soon.

All the best and good luck!

HI. I was so healthy and took vitamins and slept good and took good care of my self for most of my life and I am gray patched all over and gross breaking thinning hair. I drink lots of water and take amino acids and am not fat or skinny. I had a healthy baby boy child at age 43. But my hair is so thin and gray. My baby’s dad smoked since he was 14, he is 43 and he drinks excessively, does not eat good and has long thick shiny beautiful hair like a freaking rock star. it is a perfect color dark brown and not one gray. he never take vitamins or exercise. his pony tail is 2 inches thick. my hair falls out and is so icky and I’m supposedly healthy according to doctors. anyway wanted to let you know that I liked your article yet the first part isn’t always set in stone about being healthy and having pretty hair.

    Minaz says

Hi Lisa, I have been in your situation and I was almost going to believe that ‘genes are everything’ and ‘healthy diet’ has nothing to do with health or hair.
I use to eat healthy, do moderate exercise, but still had bad hair and I was also tired most of the time.
But then things changed when someone suggested me to do food intolerance test. So even if we eat healthy, there are certain foods that our body rejects and treats as threat. And this causes malabsorption issue. So even if you are eating healthy, it’s not being absorbed well by your body.
Where as some people have very strong and healthy digestive system, and they are able to digest everything that they eat.
I would suggest you look in to food intolerance test and if you want to get one done, do the most comprehensive one so you have a complete list of what to eat and what not to eat. Best wishes.
