Avocado Hair Mask

Do you want strong, shiny hair that grows faster?

Apply an avocado on hair.

But that stuff is food.

Yes, it is. However, it works great as a hair mask. If your question is how and why? We will come to it later, before that my story about how I fell in love with the green, creamy avocadosโ€ฆ

I was not always a fan of avocado.

I first tasted avocado when I moved to England. I had heard a lot about avocado health benefits, so I very enthusiastically bought half a dozen. I neither liked its taste or texture. Avocados were sitting in the kitchen, and I was not sure what to do with them. Soย I put them in the freezer, which preserved them for the time being.

And then the avocado hair mask happened.

The results were stunning. My hair was strong and full of body. Also, it deep conditioned hair and put in shine and smoothness to it.ย After the first try,ย  I looked forward to using the remaining avocados on my hair.

And this way avocado hair mask became one of my favourites. But I still didnโ€™t eat avocado for a long time until I tasted guacamole. One of my friends made it with onion, chilli and lime juice. It was absolutely delicious. From then on, my true romance with this fruit began. I will include the guacamole recipe at the end, do give it a try.

Now letโ€™s get to what, why, how of avocado for hair, followed by avocado hair mask recipe..

Amazing Benefits of Avocado Hair Mask

  • Moisturises hair and leaves it soft, smooth and shiny
  • Adds volume and definition to hair
  • Tames frizz and fly-aways

  • Reduces dandruff and promotes healthy scalp

The best thing about the avocado mask is that everyone can use it, whether your hair is dry or oily, fine or coarse, short or long. The avocado works for all hair and scalp. And also all hair colours โ€” it wonโ€™t colour it green.

How Does Avocado Nourish and Beautify Your Hair

Avocados contain a complete package for your hair: healthy fats, protein, vitamins A, E, C, and several B vitamins and minerals.

It Smooths Hair and Enhances Shine: The amazing fatty acids in avocados: oleic acid, palmitic acidย andย linoleic acid โ€” all offer deep conditioning and hydration, sealing in moisture and giving hair lasting shine and smoothness. Also, this helps improve manageability, so when you comb your hair, it detangles easily.

With the stash of healthy fats, avocado scores top on the conditioning factor. But it wonโ€™t let you down on strength and protection factor too. Its amino acids make hair strong, thick and voluminous.

While its powerful antioxidants โ€” vitamins E, C and Aโ€” protect hair from damage and thinning.

Avocados also look after your scalp. They help maintain the scalpโ€™s pH balance, thus reducing irritation, itching and flakiness. While their healthy fats moisturise and rejuvenate a dry scalp. And as I always say, a healthy scalp equals healthy hair.

You can eat avocados to nourish hair from within and apply some to transform your hair into glorious-dazzling tresses. But, the Proof is in the Pudding, and until you donโ€™t try it, you wonโ€™t know if it works for you.

How to Make Avocado Hair Mask

Making avocado hair mask. Scoop out avocado plup and add olive oil and honey.

Although avocados are a complete package for your hair: fats, protein, vitamins and minerals, I like to add a few more ingredients to make the hair mask more potent as well as to boost hair growth. My favorites to go along with avocado are olive oil and honey.

Olive oil is high in antioxidants and squalene โ€“ which makes hair healthy and shiny.

Honey is great for your scalp health, and it offers hydration and pH balancing effects.

How to apply

Start with dry hair. Apply this mask to your scalp and hair. Put on your shower cap or wrap your head in a muslin cloth or a towel. You can also leave your hair uncovered as this mixture wonโ€™t drip.

Leave it on for 20 to 30 minutes, then rinse out. Wash with homemade shampoo or SLS free shampoo and let your hair dry naturally.ย Repeat once a week to pamper and enrich your hair with the avocado hair mask.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Blend the mask really well. You donโ€™t want any chunks, just smooth paste of creamy consistency. This will make it easier to rinse out.
  • Choose a ripe avocado. Unripe one will not have the same effect.

guacamole on toast

As promised, hereโ€™s the recipe for guacamole

Guacamole is a Mexican dish, and in the native language, ฤhuacamolli means avocado sauce. And what a tasty sauce it is. I love to eat it for breakfast or as a mid-afternoon snack. Itโ€™s quick to make, and keeps you full for a few hours.ย And not to miss the health benefits โ€“ itโ€™s good for your heart, gut, eyes and mood.

Hereโ€™s my version of guacamole:

  • 1 ripe avocado
  • 2 teaspoons lime juice
  • 1/2 chilli (deseeded)
  • 1 tablespoon chopped coriander
  • the green part of 1 spring onion
  • salt to taste

In a bowl, mash avocado with a fork. Add chopped spring onion, chilli, coriander, lime juice and salt. Mix, mash, mix, mash. Once it becomes smooth and creamy, sever on toast and enjoy your green and healthy life. And of course, your beautiful hair!
