What is the Right Way to Comb your Hair? Combing Basics for Smooth and Silky Hair

Combing Basics

Combing Basics

I really think combing is one hair domain that is highly neglected. We do a lot of research before buying hair goods such as – shampoos, conditioners, hair oils, hair gels, and styling tools. But we hardly give a second thought as to which comb to use and how to comb. This is probably because we think that combing is a straightforward task. The answer is both yes and no. It’s not a rocket science to comb your hair, but it’s also not as simple as picking up a brush and starting to comb.

For the health of your hair, it’s important to follow certain combing rules. They are very basic, yet effective, and will keep your hair smooth and silky.

Here are Some Rules of Hair Combing

Don’t Comb your Hair when Wet:

Hair is most fragile when wet, so treat it gently. When your hair is wet, its strength to resist the force applied during combing is at its lowest. And therefore, combing wet hair may cause wear and tear, and splits. That said, when hair is dry, it’s inflexible and can break when styling. The ideal time to comb and style is when your hair is about 80 to 90% dry. That is when it’s strong and flexible. And you will get the bounce, style, and smoothness.

Use a Wide-Tooth Comb or Finger Comb to Untangle:

When your hair is about 80 to 90% dry, use a wide-tooth comb to untangle. Start at the ends, and gently work your way up towards the roots. You can also use your fingers instead, but make sure your nails are smooth, and do not snag as you part your hair. Finish styling with fine tooth comb. My hair sets well with wide tooth comb, so I don’t bother using a fine comb. Tip: Don’t forget to apply a leave-in conditioner before you start to untangle. This will make untangling easy, and improve your hair texture and shine.

Opt for Wooden Comb:

Wooden combs are gentle on your hair and scalp. They do not create static build up, as wood does not conduct electricity. Wooden combs have softer feel in comparison to plastic and metal combs. If you have a sensitive scalp then it’s worth investing in a good quality wooden comb. They also provide massaging effect to your scalp and help distribute sebum (natural oil) from the scalp to hair. I have been using a wood comb for almost 2 years, and I would highly recommend it, especially if you struggling with hair issues.
