All-Natural Detangling and Moisturising Hair Spray

All natural Detangling & Moisturising Hair Spray

ย

Detangling can be quite a task, especially for those with curly and long hair.

Most store-bought detangling sprays contain a lot of junk. And may still not work.

So if you are looking for a detangler, minus the nasty ingredients, then try this homemade detangling spray. Itโ€™s simple to make and contains just two herbs: marshmallow and horsetail.

The hero of the spray is marshmallow root!

Marshmallow root is amazing for hair. It provides the slip to your hair and makes detangling super easy โ€“ all thanks to the slippery mucilage it contains.ย Plus, this root is very moisturising and will make your hair soft and more flexible โ€“ so you will have less breakage while combing and styling.

Itโ€™s benefits are not just limited to hair. Marshmallow root tea when taken internally has a soothing effect on inflamed membranes in the mouth and throat โ€“ specifically a sore throat. Itโ€™s also said to work well on certain digestive conditions such as heartburn, stomach ulcers, indigestion, and ulcerative colitis. When used externally, it is helpful in treating skin problems such as eczema, localized irritations, and minor burns and injuries.

Coming back to detangling spray, along with marshmallow I added horsetail herb because of its high silica content. As a natural substance, silica helps to keep hair strong and adds shine and smoothness to hair.

To make this spray you will need:

Method

1. Combine marshmallow root and water in a small pan and bring to a boil.

2. Reduce heat and let it simmer for 15 to 20 minutes. The longer you let it simmer the thicker the mixture will be.

3. Remove from heat. Now add the horsetail herb, cover the pan and let cool.

4. Strain the liquid โ€“ your ordinary strainer may not filter out tiny bits which can clog the spray bottle. So use a cheese cloth, muslin cloth, or coffee filter.

5. Now add the aloe vera gelย to the filtered herb liquid; and other optional ingredients such as glycerin and lavender essential oil.

6. Also, if your hair is very dry then add a teaspoon of light oil such as argan, sesame, almond, or grapeseed oil.

7. Pour into a spray bottle and label it โ€“ name and date prepared. I prefer using glass bottle to plastic bottle but itโ€™s totally up to you which one you want to use. (You will need a spray bottle that is 8oz or 225 ml or more.)

8. Keep it in the fridge, it will stay good for a week or two.

How to use:

Shake well prior to use โ€“ this is important if you are adding essential oils and base oil as shaking will help the oils to disperse uniformly.

Spray on wet or dry hair, spread it evenly using your fingers, then comb through.

Seal in the moisture: After putting the spray you may want to apply a few drops of almond, jojoba, or argan oil (or any plant oil/butter of your choice) โ€“ this will keep the moisture and herbal goodness locked inside the hair and give you that smooth glossy finish.

Detangling tip: Use a wide-tooth wood comb to help detangle.

Scalp irritations: Marshmallow root offers some wonderful anti-inflammatory and soothing benefits, so spray some on your scalp and it will bring a quick relief.

Conditioning Hair Rinse: This recipe can also be used as a final hair rinse.

Pour the rinse slowly over freshly washed (not conditioned) hair. Massage the infusion into your hair and scalp. Leave on for 5 minutes, then rinse it out lightly with cool water.

Rinse tip: Catch the drippings in a bowl and reapply several times until they are all used.

A few other herbs you can use in this detangling spray

Feel free to experiment with other herbs based on your hairโ€™s need. Marshmallow must stay, but you can replace horsetail or combine it with other herbs listed below โ€“ add one to two tablespoons of your choice of herbs to step no 3 and follow the instructions.

Slipper elm bark โ€“ helps detangle and gives the hair a silky smooth feel

Nettle โ€“ stimulates hair growth and adds body and luster

Lavender โ€“ normalises oil production which makes it useful for all hair types

Sage โ€“ adds shine and helps darken grey hair

Chamomile โ€“ works to soothe the scalp and condition hair, also adds golden highlights

Calendula โ€“ conditions and adds golden highlights

Elderflower โ€“ hair-softening and soothes a dry, irritated scalp

Basil โ€“ moisturises and adds luster to dull hair

Enjoy crafting!
